Malik update

Apart from my daily quality God times, asking, listening, waiting, worshipping My Father who loves me, Jesus who reveals the Father to me and the Holy Spirit who is everything to me, I have been busy busy not makng time to keep you updated since March. Sorry! Thank you all you who bless me by covering me with prayer; so often in times of difficulty and in times of blessing I have known that one or more of you were praying for me at that specific time.

Well, with Malik @Seeta High School doing the first year of his A levels and me being his 'dad' I have found myself travelling to Kampala about every four weeks. In this school there is a high expectation that parents, teachers and pupils will partner together to ensure that each pupil gets the very best out of their education. Seeta HS is one of the top ten schools in the whole of Uganda and although Malik was in the top ten students in the whole of South Sudan at 'O' level, it has taken a lot of hard work to adapt to the differences between South Sudan and Ugandan systems and the distintive style of the school.

At the end of the first term he was way short of an acceptable performance in the examinations, but the head is so understanding of where he has come from and was encouraging that with even more hard work he will be OK. Malik did not take any holiday at the end of the first term he chose to pay for extra tuition (called coaching here) and board in school for the 3-week holiday. At the end of the second term his exam performance was so much better, but still underperforming. He had however overtaken many of his classmates who performed much better than he did during the first term. Malik decided to come home to the Iris Children's Village @Yei for one week and then he travelled back by himself to school for 2-weeks extra tuition. On Monday 27th August he is going to do 4-days work experience @The Surgey in Kampala, which is quite exciting for us.

I will travel to Kampala by public transport on the 27th ready to take Malik back to school for the third and final term of senior 5. We have just enough money left from his sponors to pay for the third term. Before he started senior 5 we thought we had sufficient funds to see him through senior 5 and 6, but we have come to realise that the school fees are only a part of the cost of schooling here for a foreign student. School uniform, accomodation and tuition during school holidays, mountains of excercise books, text books, snack food, sugar, tea, bread, peanut butter etc to supplement the bare minimum of school meals have all eaten away what we thought would be available for his second year of A levels.
