Edward returns to IHSU, Kampala, Uganda

Edward arrived at my home in Bweyogerere, Uganda on the morning of Wednesday 7th August 2013 after travelling overnight from Arua. He had visited Kenedy at School in Arua on the Tuesday.

Edward and I vidited the Internation Health Sciences University a couple of times in the following days to check that his fees had arrived from his sponsor in USA and to arrange accomodation near to the university. Edward will be there for the next three years studying to qualify as a Clinical Officer. A Clinical Officer acts as a doctor in rural and bush villages where there are insufficient fully qualified doctors. Edward hopes to qualify fully as a doctor at some time in the future.

It was such a delight to me and him when we arrived at the hospital security check; everyone recognised him from his 11-months there in 2011 and gave him a big welcome back. Almost every step we too up to the third floor of the university block he was greeted and welcomed by staff members and tutors.

On Tuesday 13th August it was agreed that Edward could have a bed sharing a room with two other boys in the house that he stayed in during 2011. The house is secure and within a few minutes walk of IHSU. He will take most of his meals at the university and at weekends he has the option for Mama Daisy to make his meals. We met Mama Daisy and had a cuppa tea each time we visited the university, which is based at the Kampala International Hospital, St Barnabas Road, Namuwongo.

On Friday 15th August, Irina and I took Edward and all his luggage to the university and then to the house, which will be his term time home for probably for the next three years. During holidays he will have the option of staying with me or visiting his village in South Sudan. His sister Beida is living at Iris Children's Village, Yei where she is studing for 'O' levels at St Joseph's Secondary School.

Here are the only three photographs that I took of Edward during his time here, so far.
